Newcastle Light Rail network extension- Urban Design Analysis

Prepared for Transport for NSW, 2022

About

Studio 26 and Rhizome were engaged by Transport for New South Wales to prepare the (confidential) Newcastle Light Rail Network Extension - Urban Design Analysis in 2022. The Urban Design Analysis was the first step towards facilitating a discussion regarding the potential extension of the Newcastle Light Rail Network from Newcastle Interchange to Broadmeadow. The Urban Design Analysis methodology was underpinned by a site analysis process that explored six distinct light rail route options through a series of illustrative maps that recount the area’s history, environmental, cultural and planning constraints. The Urban Design Analysis included a wide range of illustrations, including typological analysis, broad-brush artist impressions, typical sections and key precincts plans, that explore each route option in more detail. With the analysis of the each options highlighted and their benefits quantified more informed decisions surrounding public and active transport mode share would be enabled through streetscape configuration scenarios and potential land use change across the Study Area.
